Why and how LENS™ (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) reduces symptoms and restores functioning

Why?

Central Nervous System (CNS) symptoms and slow brainwave activity are related.

When people are injured, traumatized, or otherwise overly stressed, their brainwaves may get fixed or "stuck" in a pattern of predominantly low frequency brainwave activity. This is called "EEG slowing." Symptoms commonly associated with EEG slowing include: anxiety, depression, irritability, fatigue, pain, hyperactivity, distractibility, spaciness, mood swings, confusion, disorganization, problems with sleep, and difficulties with concentration, memory, attention, reading comprehension, and following conversations. EEG slowing may occur when the integrating function of the cerebral cortex is impaired. LENS™ helps restore this function and is a direct means of affecting, and often resolving, the symptoms listed above. LENS™ interrupts the brain's maladaptive processing system and restores it to its own optimal functioning pattern. LENS™ seems to reactivate the brain's natural ability to perform with clarity and efficiency. While not everyone can be helped, many people have untapped resources and can reach better functioning- even if they had been told they would not.

LENS™ reduces "EEG slowing" and optimizes functioning. With the help of sophisticated computer technology, the patient's own brainwaves are used to return information back to the brain. Feedback is provided by a set of tiny "transducers" which send either imperceptible light signals or electromagnetic energy pulses so weak as to be virtually unmeasurable...yet the brain can detect - and benefit from - both. The feedback reduces EEG slowing and permits the cerebral cortex, the sophisticated outer layer of the brain, to work efficiently again. When EEG slowing is reduced, symptoms can decrease or even disappear. At the culmination of therapy, the brain adopts this new level of flexibility and, like a thermostat that has been reset., functions automatically at the new, more integrated level, no longer needing the help of LENS™.

When slow-wave activity is reduced, flexibility improves, and symptoms decrease or even disappear.

What is LENS™?

LENS™ is an advanced form of Biofeedback. Because it is still very new, few know about it and fewer can conceive that it can achieve what it demonstrates. It is non invasive and painless, and requires only that a patient sit comfortably in a chair wearing specially modified sunglasses that generate feedback. There is no need for focused attention or a conscious learning task. It will take years for scientific documentation adequately to demonstrate its effects. But clinical experience and two current research studies appear to justify our confidence in this system.

Who can benefit from LENS™?

People suffering from effects of brain injury (regardless of origin), extreme stress, anxiety attacks, depression, emotional trauma, attention deficit disorder, autism, explosive disorders, Alzheimer's Disease, Headaches and Fibromyalgia have benefited greatly. Post-stroke deficits have also improved with LENS™.

How long does it take?

A person's sensitivity to the feedback, and the longer the person has been symptomatic, determine treatment length. Effects of a single upset may be resolved in as few as four or five sessions. Complex problems may take 40 or more. A single session lasts about 30 minutes.

Do the effects of LENS last? Is the method proven?

LENS has been studied clinically since 1990. Seventy-seven percent of more than 3,000 people treated have experienced significant improvement in their CNS symptoms, and the benefits gained seem to sustain or increase, unless new trauma occurs.

LENS enhances other forms of therapy for mood, energy & cognitive rehabilitation. As LENS increases flexibility of the brain's functioning, learning of all kinds becomes easier. Even fairly early in treatment, many describe a greater sense of ease and clarity. They learn new cognitive and emotional skills more quickly and become more capable of self-management. For this reason, LENS can dramatically enhance the effectiveness of other physical and psychological therapies. When the brain is working well, all therapies are more productive and peak performance is possible.
